To understand the TechDiscovery difference is to understand the difference between commercial-grade software and in-house applications. To be commercial-grade, a software product must be developed to a higher standard. Since the end users may reside outside your organization, the software must be easily managed and maintained. Usability, scalability and extensibility must be built in to withstand use by great numbers of users, from the hundreds to the thousands into the millions. What does commercial grade mean to TechDiscovery?
- Bulletproof: Commercial-grade software must operate 24x7 for large numbers of remote users. That calls for more rigorous and detailed functional, system and requirement testing.
- Rigorous security measures: Since the application may be utilized outside a corporate firewall, and often over the Internet, a high level of application security and authentication is required.
- Automation: Wherever possible, housekeeping and maintenance tasks, such as archiving and database repair, must be automated and transparent to the user.
- Maintainable and self-managed: The software must be well documented, follow industry standards, be easy to update and archive data appropriately.
- Scalable: Depending on application requirements, usage must be able to scale to thousands or even millions of users. The platform should scale to provide greater capacity.
- Extensible: The ability to add additional functionality, release new upgrades and integrate other applications is a critical requirement.
- Portability: Transporting the application to different technology platforms is often a prerequisite.
